This is Day 2 of the Alex Beadon 7 day Feel Good Blogging Challenge.. My assignment is: Tell my story about becoming an entrepeneur.

I have at least 30 years experience as a computer programmer/ analyst. I coded, tested and implemented COBOL, CICS and DB2 programs for major corporations and insurance companies. This is SQL database programming that produces displays on computers at customer service locations.

So, my last employer downsized and guess what? In my department 7 people including me were let go, all of us were over 50 years young.

And you need to face this fact, if you are over 50, nobody wants to hire you as an employee. Well at least not for a really lucrative job. So If you are younger, you should be saving at least 10% of your gross salary for your retirement.

I was able to work as an independent contractor on specific projects for several years. Eventually, that type of work was outsourced to India.

So I settled for employment in an unrelated industry for “small dollars”. I got into a comfort zone. You should NEVER get into a comfort zone.

Becoming a website designer/developer

At this point a few of my co-workers asked me why, with my experience, was I doing that job. I indicated that I was taking a class in Website Design. One thing lead to another and I designed websites for some friends. I made a few bucks and developed a passion for website design.

I took a hiatus from website design to take care of family matters. Remember, I was still in my comfort zone.

I’m getting ready to get out of that comfort zone and do website design full time.
